There's a Hitch with the Hitch

Finding the Right Hitch

One of the biggest surprises we’ve discovered is there’s not a universal way to tow something. There’s so much to know, and everyone you talk to will tell you the same thing, but call it something different. So here is our challenges with getting a hitch.

So here’s where we are at. We have the right truck now, we’ve purchased the fifth wheel so now all we need is a device, a contraption, a doohickey thingamabob to connect the trailer to the truck and off we go. Easy enough, right?? I mean there’s 5 holes in the bed of the truck to attach said hitch should be fairly straightforward.

So we asked for a recommendation from the RV salesman. He said we should get a B&W Companion sliding hitch. We have a short bed truck so the hitch should slide so that at slow speeds when you are maneuvering, the hitch can slide so the front of your fifth wheel doesn’t collide with the cab of your truck (bad news). Okay so we start calling around to see if we can pick this up. The first guy we talk to doesn’t recommend B&W, instead suggests we get a PullRite because it’s an automatic hitch. He starts asking if we have a Puck system. What the puck??? What is that?? Turns out that is the 5 holes in the bed of the truck. Well he doesn’t have one. So we start looking online.

Going online, we discover that PullRite is not making the automatic slider hitch for our model of truck since there was a slight change in the positioning of the pucks. Well that was a waste. Back to the B&W....but....it’s a manual slider which would mean I would have to get out of the truck, pull some lever, in order for the hitch to slide. I’m imagining it will be raining whenever I need to do this. Not a fan.

Our search discovers there is another automatic slider, a Demco. Looks like a winner, but it needs an adapter to attach to the Ram. There is also one other issue, this thing weighs about 450 pounds!! So if we go with this, the hitch will be the only thing in the bed of the truck. Plus the weight is concerning me because we are running pretty close even with the new truck. Back to the B&W, which is still close to 300 pounds, and manual, but it fits the pucks we have. Still there isn’t one in stock anywhere, so we continued our search.

We continued our search and found this YouTuber who was a full time RVer who was comparing the Demco sliding to an Andersen Ultimate connector. So it sounded exactly what we were searching for. He originally purchased the Demco because he puts stuff in the truck bed when he goes his trailer. He has a Ram truck. It’s like he was speaking to me. So this new hitch attaches to the gooseball....Oh God!!!, something new!! This is the fifths of the 5 holes in the bed of the truck....whew. As I watch the video, he recommends this new hitch because it’s lighter (only 35 pounds), can be attached in 5 minutes, and still gives the maneuverability without sliding because the hitch attaches 9.5 inches back. So you can order this on Amazon. Okay this is getting even better. Oh and it’s about $1500 less than the Demco.

Bed Shafts and Gooseballs

So great, we ordered hitch. It will arrive before we leave. Anderson has a colorful (and confusing) chart to ensure it will connect to our truck. Now we need to determine what our pin box is....OH NO! what the hell is a pin box. We asked the RV guy, it’s the connector from the fifth when to the hitch. He sends a picture. It’s a MorRyde. Oh look, there’s a column for MorRyde on the chart. Oh no, we need an adapter. Oh jeez. We next we need a gooseball. More research. We find a video of a guy with 4 gooseballs. Great, I guess I need to figure this out. Ugh!!

UPDATE - The order was lost.....UGH!! Oh well....new plan we'll reorder and get it shipped along the way. #rollwiththepunches

Hold the phone!! What is this bed shaft? I've never heard of this. Oh man this is so maddening!!. So after looking into this, it turns out that this is a part that Andersen makes INSTEAD of the gooseball that goes into the bed of the truck and then I don't need a gooseball OR a connecting tube. I ordered online, and picked up in a local store. I installed in two seconds. Boy that was easier than I could have imagined. Even better was finding out the MorRyde pin box was not movable so I didn't need anything else. Hoo-Fricking-Ray!!

Carry me away for the last time"
